Beekeeping Experience with OpenHive and Windyridge Nurseries 2025

OpenHive have partnered with Windyridge Nurseries to deliver an exciting new experience: An Introduction to Beekeeping.

The courses usually run on the last Saturday of every month from May - September. If you are buying this as a gift we will reach out to the participant in the new year and let them select a date that suits them! - we wont contact them before Christmas don’t worry!!

OVERVIEW

Whether you want to learn more about bees or are interested in dipping your toe in the water before getting your own bees, this is a great way to get up close with our native Irish honeybee. The experience runs for three hours and includes an informal talk (about our bees, the beekeeping season, harvesting honey etc.), a honey tasting session and of course hands on practical beekeeping.

LOCATION
The experience will be based out of Windyridge Nursery and Garden Centre on Rochestown Avenue in Dun Laoghaire followed by a visit to our local apiary in Cherrywood (less than 10 minutes away). The address of the garden centre is: Windyridge Nursery & Garden Centre, 112 Rochestown Ave, Dún Laoghaire, Dublin, A96 YV24.

BOOKING
After purchase we will send you a digital certificate for this experience that you can use to book your course or give as a gift. In the checkout you will have the opportunity enter the name of the recipient in case it is not yourself.

FORMAT (9-12)

  • 9am: Meet at the Windyridge outdoor classroom on Rochestown Avenue

  • 9- 10am: Learn about our native honeybees and the beekeeping season (notes provided)

  • 10- 10:15am: Coffee break

  • 10:15-10:45am: honey tasting - we will taste several honeys from our Dublin and Wicklow apiaries.

  • 10:45-11am: Move to the local apiary in Cherrywood (directions will be provided to the apiary which is an 8 minute drive away)

  • 11am-12 midday: Beekeeping experience. You will put on a beekeeping suit and join us for a hive inspection. This is an immersive experience that can help start you on your journey to keeping bees or allow you to deepen your knowledge.

  • 12 midday: - Finish

DATES
These experience mornings will run monthly on the last Saturday morning from April 2023 onwards. Once purchased you can book into any of our mornings (subject to places being available)
